Black and White and Everything In Between

A simple black and white ensemble...or is it? (Lovin’ this winter white trend.) I’ve always been interested in the great yin and yang of black and white. Of course, in TV, film, literature, and pop culture, black and white dress is used as a metaphor to symbolize the dichotomy between good and evil. White, of course, represents purity, innocence, and above all, “goodness”. (Whatever that is.) While black represents evil, darkness, and ya know...bad guys n’ stuff. Pretty elementary stuff here, folks. In psychology, this “Black and White” thinking is known as Splitting. Splitting simply means that you think purely in extremes like, goodness vs. evil, innocence vs. corruption, victimization vs. oppression...you get the picture. This way of thinking is actually used as a defense mechanism that can stem from “existential insecurity”, or instability of one's self-concept. Has anyone else noticed that too many people today are thinking in B&W lately...like, politically and socially speaking? (Republican BAD. Democrat GOOD. My religion (or lack thereof) GOOD. Whatever you believe...that’s BAD!) This black and white thinking only seems to be getting worse with each passing day! Which is unfortunate because according to those academic, intellectual-type psychologists, this simply means that person MAY be feeling a bit insecure in what they believe. Some old guy has this famous quote that says, “Believe those who seek the truth. Doubt those who find it.” Is it possible that people get so stuck in black and white thinking because they feel like they shouldn’t ponder and discuss and learn from all those gorgeous shades of grey in-between? (What about chrome? And fog? Silver and Platinum? Think of all the metallics your mising out on! And taupe...taupe is hot right now.) So while a strictly black and white ensemble is tres chic, don’t forget to dabble in grays ;)

Vintage Black Hat. Thrifted sweater. Citizens of Humanity cords. Theory booties. Stolen From Jasmine necklace. F21 cuff.

Until next time,

Brittany

  2. You are so right girl. Now a days, if you don't agree with someone, you are bad and their political ideology/religion/world view is good. I have one correction to make to your blog: the necklace is from the House of Aunt Gitty, as loaned by Ms. Jasmine Ladjevardi. That is all. Oh, and yes, I love that I care more about your social commentary than your fashion, which is always impeccable.

  3. Dude, splitting is OVER.

When it comes to politics and religion, I would say that I am very open minded. However, in more personal areas of my life, I tend to think in B&W extremes. Like jet black, transparent white. I absolutely agree that this type of thinking is used as a defense mechanism. Therefore, I'm busting out the fifty shades of metallic grays today. Thanks for the kick in the butt.

p.s. I want you to know that I *adore* your writing style. I nodded, I smiled, I related.
