Don't Try

One of my favorite writers of all time (After Robert Smith; I mean that guy just gets me, man.) is famous American poet, Charles Bukowski. And one thing that has always stuck with me is the message he left on his gravemarker, "Don't try." I mean gosh, that's got to be some of the best advice I've ever heard.

And while this advice can be applied to a myriad of life situations, doesn't it feel especially applicable to the fashion world? A world where everyone strives, yearns, and busts their ass to look "effortless" and "undone"; well this is the secret formula, folks. Don't try. NO- stop thinking, "Oh wow! This is great advice. I can't wait to go home and try out not trying for myself!" Just suspend your thoughts and let it floooooooooowwwwwwwww outta you, baby! That's how I get dressed. I don't start with an agenda, or a style, or even a specific inspiration in mind. I simply walk over to the closet and let it happen! Which is precisely how this little number came about. I wore this out to the Lookbook.nu/Wasteland Holiday party in Hollywood last week, and it was the perfect, "I didn't even try and I still look better than all you's" ensemble, don't ya think? Think about it. Trust me, you'll have that Kate Moss/Alexa Chung/Brittany Fowler thing down in NO time ;)

OH and PS- In case you failed to notice, my baby sistah, Chelsea, is the newest co-editor of Pardon My Fashion! It was only natural, since she is my thrifting, pile-saleing, and vintage obsessed Partner In Crime. Good style just runs in the family.

Until next time,

Brittany

  2. When I think of the advice 'don't try' I think about the fact that life is so pointless, that there is no point trying. It's like we have been brain washed to 'try' because of the way modern, capitalist society works. Err, I could go on forever about this.. and I'm kind of rambling. Aaanyway, the outfit is great.
