I don’t know if I’ve got some faulty wiring up there or something, but the answer to “Is this too short?” will always be and enthusastic, “Hell no.” Who likes short shorts? I like short shorts…and dresses and skirts, too. (Style Pro-Tip: Balance a leggy mini with long sleeves.) I like minis because they make you (well, myself at least) feel kinda saucy; flirty and femme and fun. And I rather like people who are flirty, femme, and fun…sounds like a damn good time to me. As I get older, I feel like there is pressure to become more conservative on matters of mini skirts and booty shorts. Like my peers, I feel like I should be questioning, “How can she wear that out in public? What was she thinking? No self-respecting woman would wear that…I mean doesn’t she want men to respect her?” UM…hold up. Sounds like the dudes problem to me. I can’t really get behind the attitude that if you are dressed like a ‘slut’ (ie. showing lots of skin) that somehow warrants men to treat you like shit? OMG epiphany…I’m not the one with faulty wiring…it’s dudes! Dudes, listen, every woman is fully capable of wearing Daisy Dukes and a bra top while at the same time ‘respecting’ herself and knowing that she has worth beyond her gorgeous physical appearance. We enjoy being sexy and being intelligent individuals...all at the same time. So regardless of whether we’re wearing a Burqua or a string bikini…YOU can go ahead and just treat us all the same way you would treat every human being. (And ladies, it would be nice if we all did the same…don’t ya think?) Even if our mini skirt does make you trip over your words sometimes ;)
Thrifted sweater. Thrifted dress. Thrifted Shoes. Thrifted hat. F21/DIY-hacker necklace.

OK. Aside for ABSOLUTELY LOVING this outfit (seriously, everything about it appeals to me and I want to copy it ASAP),
ReplyDeleteI feel like this brings up SUCH an interesting point. Even referring to the way that we dress when we show a lot of skin as "slutty" immediately infers that we're doing it to gain some sort of male attention.
But what if we just like the silhouette it makes? Or the texture of said "slutty" skirt? Or the effortlessness of so little fabric?
I'd always assumed that people showing too much skin (including myself) were secretly or not so secretly doing it to impress the opposite sex (or to make the same sex annoyingly jealous), but it's interesting to really consider the fact that that's not always the case!
I always feel ashamed when I wear something short, even if I'm wearing it just because I love the way it looks/makes me feel. This has totally changed my perspective.
THANK YOU.
you're smart.

First, your outfit is perfection, and I gotta say: you got great gams!
ReplyDeleteSecond, you've hit the nail on the head: somehow the bad behavior of men can always be justified by the "inappropriate" fashion choices women make - and women make the mistake of internalizing that and bashing other women when we should be celebrating them. That's why the blogosphere can be such a refreshing, empowering place - I find it so supportive. In the end, I think whether you wear a short skirt, or not, is your choice and to do with your comfort levels. I sure hope we can all filter out those negative messages that tell us we should or shouldn't wear what we love.
Thanks for sharing! Xoxo
I couldn't agree more. Spice World still exists for those of us who refuse to succumb to other people's mold of what's 'appropriate'. GIRL POWER.

PREACH SISTER! i couldn't agree more and this reminds me of a ted talk i watched recently where the guy was saying that most of what we call women's issues are actually men's issues and need to be dealt with as such. keep on rocking those minis and loving yourself while you do it!
